Moulding
What is "moulding"?
Moulding is the final step in the creation of a frame package and can deliver a most pleasing effect for your artwork. Moulding can make or break a frame package and it is vitally important to choose the proper profile that will suit and enhance your artwork presentation. Moulding comes in several different forms of material. The framing industry usually relies on the three most popular, which are wood, metal and polystyrene (plastic). All have their pros and cons.
Wood moulding being the most widely used, comes in a multitude of different colours, sizes and profiles which are usually created by a team of designers that are under contract to the moulding companies. At Royale Art Salon, we have several hundred different wood moulding profiles and colours to choose from. These range from the more traditional and antique styles of moulding suitable for many different framing options to the more modern styles which are very popular with today's younger generation. There are also several styles available for "shadow-boxing". We have something for everyone and our prices are always very competitive. Wood moulding has a slightly lower tolerance when being hit or mishandled than the metal or polystyrene moulding. Please see our "framing special" page for some pricing options.
The metal moulding of today have evolved from the simple "#11" or "#15" frame to more complex designs which have become very stylized and some are ultra-modern designs suitable for the more modern prints and posters. These metal mouldings come in many colours and will match any decor, posters or prints. Metals can be used either with or without mats. Most metal moulding are not suitable for shadow-boxing. And yes, the #11 and #15 mouldings are still available for the more simplistic frame packages. Please see our "framing special" page for some pricing options.
Polystyrene, or plastic moulding has taken a seat beside the wood and metal moulding over the last few years, and for very good reason. These mouldings are not what they used to be. Remember when plastic moulding used to look like it was covered with "MacTac®" that was made to look somewhat like wood? Today's polystyrene moulding comes in hundreds of colours and profiles and are more cost-effective than the traditional wood moulding. They are great for the budget-minded person who still likes the look of traditional wood moulding. Polystyrene moulding is less likely to get damaged when it is lightly hit. However, if you hit it hard enough, it will still damage! When choosing a polystyrene moulding, one has to keep in mind that it is more likely to bend than wood, so it is vitally important that you choose the proper width and thickness of moulding to support the size and weight of your artwork. Royale Art Salon has all of the newest lines of polystyrene mouldings and we will assist you in choosing the proper moulding for your budget and design.
